LOL - I fully realize that in 1965 people were running 120 mph quarters without any damn seatbelts at all, but this one just screamed sketchy at me--

Do you know what this is? This is the front seat of a supercharged 427 Galaxie with a Turbonique
rocket turbine on the rear axle. Low 9s with nearly a full interior.

I don’t
really think that car with a push rod 360 and 4 bbl could have a trap speed of 120 at the end of the quarter.
I bet it’s more like 90-100 mph max.

This is gold. A car with a nuclear weapon under the hood and an actual fucking ROCKET in back, with no belts. Light weight, don’t you know. Had to save it somewhere.

Well,I mean, only if you hit something. It’s only 1/4 mile though, and all you have to do is go straight. How hard can it be?

It should be able to top 100 easily, although 120 seems like a stretch to me. It sure doesn’t have the tires that a 120 mph car should have - unless you get some thrill from running 13.70 at 120 in a cloud of smoke.

Yeah at any real speed, the only thing they would accomplish is to make it easier to find the body.

Just because it’s not a Mustang, doesn’t mean it’s easy to keep it pointed straight ahead. :)

Eh, pretty easy to get 400+hp out of one with mild mods.
The 392 Charger traps at 112mph with less power/torque in a far heavier car.

No car this old is safe on the street or track, really. Reality is that I want a car from this era mainly for low speed cruising.

Oh no. 120MPH from an LA 4bbl? Absolutely fucking doable. I have seen it done. I have seen much, much higher trap speeds. If you built exclusively for the quarter mile? These things will do it. They will do it all day long. They weigh less than an Acura Integra - no joke. 2600lbs from the factory.
And this thing was BUILT for it. Look at the headers. Probably bored, decked, and running 950cfm. Not to mention, these never came with the 360 from the factory . 65, the biggest you could get was the 273. It’s built.
But there is no fucking way NHRA/IHRA or any legit track would EVER allow this thing to make a 120 pass. Not a chance in hell.

It’s a 65 Dart.
So long as you don’t hit ANYTHING* , you might survive.
* - such as speed bumps, pot holes, small furry creatures, styrofoam board, etcetera. Regardless of speed.

I have found a lot of these older “hot rods” to be disappointingly
slow, like more noise than movement. If this car is legit, and it looks to be I believe you, as I have very little mopar experience.
I
remember winning against many so called hot rods
with my stock datsun 240z, and
that’s just embarrassing
. The datsun had 170 HP on a good day and did 90 mph in the 1/4 in IDEAL conditions.

I used to hang around a Mopar shop that did nothing but these.
The slow ones are bigass yachts with 2.13 gears and badly adjusted Dorkflites. Even a 426 Hemi can’t make 4000lbs of Detroit’s average-est steel go that fast. The ‘65 Dart was a ‘compact’ car for the time. (Yet allegedly could still manage a 10 5MPH top speed with the 225 /6.)
‘65 Dart with even a stock 360/4bbl ? “I just shit my pants” is the only phrase that fits. Again, these things weighed basically NOTHING. And if it’s period correct? Half your don’t-crash structure and frame was probably drilled full of holes to make it even lighter still. Because, I mean really, look at the belts. You think they cared about safety?
These things will always scare the shit out of me. Especially when you consider that this thing has non-power drum brakes . Seriously. Look under the hood, there is no brake booster. At all.
But it’s a 60's Mopar. So yes. It sold. For the BIN price. 5 minutes ago.

From the factory these cars were not quick by today’s standards- none of them were.
And lots of hot rodders made dumb decisions on camshafts, transmissions, and rear ends, but this car is so light, you can make it very quick, if you can get the power to the ground ( another area where these cars failed hard originally).
And as rootwyrm points out, that engine sure as hell isn’t original- the 360 came out years after this car did.

Oh, at one time I dailied a 64 Dynamic 88- no belts at all - and would regularly road trip it between Dayton, Ohio and C hampaign, Illinois.
And the last accident I was in was driving a 65 Skylark convertible- also no belts- but that was in 1984.

Honestly, I felt safer in my 66 Electra than I do in modern cars, mostly because I could see everything and felt more aware of my surroundings.
I we wouldn’t have needed the cash to fix our truck, I would still be dailying it today.

Mine was a 2 door hardtop, with no outside mirrors at all - so blind spots were a bit of a pain, but otherwise that car was a real pleasure to drive, even with the goofy Roto-Hydramatic.
My problem now is that any commute involves driving on Chicago expressways - not ideal for an older car.
There is a guy near me who dailies a 1st gen Corvair sedan. He seems to live near shop-teacher and work near me (we both know the car). I tip my cap to that guy.
